This awe-inspiring campaign inspired Buckeyes to act

This spring, we’re celebrating the good that’s been done by Ohio State’s giant fundraising and community-building effort.

Spring reminds us to celebrate the change happening around us everywhere. From the first tulips poking through remnants of snow, to that glorious day when it’s finally warm enough to work in the garden, nothing is both as surprisingly new and reassuringly familiar as change.

This issue of our magazine is all about change. Time and Change: The Ohio State Campaign, to be exact. Six years ago, The Ohio State University publicly launched the most ambitious community-building and fundraising effort in our history. Despite unforeseen obstacles, challenges and a global pandemic, the campaign endured, and this spring, we’re celebrating its awe-inspiring impact.

In a historical photo, a baseball player crouches and wears a serious expression as he is photographed. The front of his jersey says Ohio and his mitt is thick with an extra large thumb portion.

Ohio State Alumni Magazine is featuring articles about a few of the campaign’s 800,000-plus unique donors and a breakdown of projects and initiatives made possible by the money raised. There are as many reasons people give to Ohio State as there are donors. While alumni represent the largest single group, nearly three-quarters of our supporters did not go to school here. Their connection to our family might be as faculty or staff, patients of the medical center, Buckeye fans, loved ones of alumni or generous local benefactors.

A few years ago, my husband and I wanted to find a fitting way to honor my father and uncle, Ohio State graduates and co-captains of the Buckeye baseball team. Uncle George ’48 and Norbert Ranz ’49, ’52 DDS were recruited before athletic scholarships existed, so they were assigned student jobs to pay for their education. We decided a fitting tribute was to fund a scholarship for athletes who, like George and Norbert, are the first generation of their families to attend college.

We are fortunate to be able to endow a scholarship, but not all giving is financial. Time, talent and treasure are equally important at Ohio State, and this magazine honors everyone who gives, in whatever way makes sense for them. Together, we’ve made Time and Change the most successful campaign in our school’s history.

One constant at Ohio State is that while we embrace our proud traditions, we are always ready to change. It is why we say, “When the future calls, Buckeyes answer!”
