Jeremiah Smith opens up about fame, fear and fun

You know Jeremiah Smith as a Heisman Trophy favorite after a freshman season of being the Wizard of Ahs with his wondrous catches that set records and led the Buckeyes to a national championship. But did you know he was nicknamed “J.J.” as a child in South Florida because he was skinny like a character from the 1970s sitcom “Good Times”? The star receiver shared details about himself in a recent interview. Read on and watch the video above to learn more about him.

Why do you play chess?

I think it has a lot to do with life. You got to think before you move. That’s the reason why I started playing chess. My dad took me to a library one day, and there was an elderly guy there, and he just taught me the game a little bit. I just fell in love with it.

You’re known for one-handed catches. Do you text with one hand?

No. Two thumbs.

Favorite class you’ve taken at Ohio State?

I’m taking stats right now, and it’s probably my favorite.

What is it like for you to go out in public?

I can’t go certain places by myself. When I do go out, I know I’m going to get bombarded with pictures and autographs. I just try to plan before I go out somewhere. I wear hats, beanies, anything to try to disguise who I am, but people still figure out it’s me. People follow me around. It’s pretty hectic, but I know it’s a blessing.

How do you escape from all the attention?

I’m a homebody. I just like to chill. I like to sleep, play a video game with teammates or friends back home, or just watch TV.

Describe your usual wardrobe.

Most times, I’ll probably be in some sweatpants, a jacket.

People who have known you all your life describe you as an old soul. Why?

As a young kid, they said I was just like an older person. I’ve always been serious since I was little.

Favorite musical artist?

I like either Lil Durk or Rod Wave. I like old-school rappers as well, like Tupac, DMX. I like to listen to those guys before games to get me going.

Name something you’re afraid to try and why.

A roller coaster. I’m scared of heights and always have been. I’m scared of any big rides or tall rides.

Favorite birthday gift?

Getting a bike when I was like 9 years old.

Do you believe in Santa Claus?

I don’t. I never really thought Santa Claus was real.

Do you believe in Brutus Buckeye?

For sure.
